What made Seongdong district's modern development possible occurred after the Korean War on 25 June, after liberalization from Japanese occupation. Thereafter, the population increased rapidly, many manufacturing facilities emerged, the Han River was restored and redeveloped, and a large sports park was established on the site of the former Ttukseom Racetracks.

The antiquated and worn-down areas in Geumho, Oksu, Hengdang, Eungbong-dong and others, which had been developed without proper planning have been redeveloped and reconstructed into pleasant and large-scale apartment complexes. Seongdong district will continue to grow as Seoul’s central, most relaxing and liveable region with the Cheonggye Stream restoration project, Wangsimni New Town development, Ttukseom Seoul Forest Park development, and others.

Fifteen subway stations through which subway lines 2, 3, and 5 and the national railroad pass and the Bunddang line subway system are currently under construction. This will make Seongdong the central transport hub of northeast Seoul connecting Gangnam and Gangbuk, with the Dongho Bridge and the Seongsu Bridge as axes.

As the water city that borders on a total 14.2km waterside, including Cheonggye- cheon, Jungryang-cheon, and the Han River, Seongdong will continue to flourish through active waterside development.

Seongdong district offers diverse functionality, such as a manufacturing district with the Seongsu heavy-industries area of 2.17㎢; as a logistical district with the Yongdap-dong Used Car Sales Market and the Majang Livestock Market; and as a residential district with large apartment complexes in Geumho, Oksu, and Hengdang-dong.
