About the Regular Performance of Mt. Bong Mask Dance
Bongsan mask dance performed –twice a year - by Kim Ki-su, a skill holder of important intangible cultural assets no. 17, is appreciated by a few hundred people in every event thanks to the historical and cultural value. The performance is comprised in seven chapters, where audience can learn the dance from Master Kim and dance at the event together.
The outline of Bongsan Mask Dance
This mask dance was passed on in the Gilyang-ri Dongseo-myeon Bongsan-gun Hwanghae-do region, was moved to Sariwon around 1915 and continued to be delegated. The Bongsan Mask Dance marked the climax of mask performances in Hwanghae-do, along with the , and optimally represents the Hwanghae-do-style Korean mask performances in terms of the scripts, dances, masks, clothing and accompaniment. As with other mask dances, the dancing is the main focus while body gestures, motions and songs serve a supporting role.
The Bongsan Mask Dance consists of 7 section performances - section 1 SasangJwa(four head monks sedentary) dance; section 2 Palmokjung(eight monks) dance; section 3 Sadang(fair lady) dance; section 4 Nojang(seniors) dance; section 5 Saja(lions) dance; section 6 Yangban Malddugi(the noblemans and the truth-revealing Malddugis) dance; and section 7 Miyal Yeonggam(old man, Miyals) dance.
The dance has more vibrant moves and resembles the continental legacy of the Korean Mask Play compare to informal and satire performance of the commoners, full of entertaining elements and realistic techniques. Besides mater Kim Ki-su, Yang So-won, Yoon Ok and Kim Ae-seon also hold unique skills of each section.
